Detailed Review Of The DeWalt DC970K-2 Drill/Driver

DC970K-2 Drill:DriverI do a lot of work in the construction industry, so I’m certainly no stranger to the latest and greatest tools. So when I had a chance to try the DeWalt DC970K-2 18-Volt Drill/Driver Kit, I was immediately excited. There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t use a cordless drill—in fact, my livelihood sort of depends on one. Over the years, I’ve used a lot of tools, but I’ve found that through my experience DeWalt has the best reputation among professional builders and homeowners alike.

What Makes The DC970K-2 Cordless Drill/Driver Special?

Unlike a conventional cordless drill, a combination drill/driver offers the best of both worlds. And because it’s battery powered, you don’t need to drag around a heavy power cord all day long. A powerful motor makes sure that you’ll have plenty of power to drill, while still being able to tune it down in order to safely fasten the most delicate of screws without stripping them.

But not all cordless drill/driver combination tools are the same. The following list is what I look for in a quality cordless drill/driver. Lets see how the DC970K-2 stacks up.

  • Powerful Motor
  • Lightweight and Compact
  • Multiple Battery Packs
  • Fast One-Hour Charger
  • Keyless Ratcheting Chuck
  • DC970K-2 vs. DC825B
  • Top of the Line Warranty
  • High Performance Motor

DC970K-2Big Power In A Small Package

With a duel speed capability of 0-450 and 0-1,500 rpm’s, it has a high performance motor neatly tucked away under its distinctive yellow casing. Whether it’s wood, metal, plastic or drywall, you can be sure that you’re going to have plenty of power to drill and drive through just about anything that comes your way.

Lightweight Means Less Fatigue

What I really like about theDrill/Driver is that it’s not a heavy tool at all. Weighing just 5.2 pounds, I am always surprised at how light it is when I pick it up, especially as it’s nine inches long. The weight is really cut back because it has a durable plastic chuck versus a conventional heavy metal chuck.

DeWalt DC970K-2 batteryDual 18V Battery Packs Allow Continual Use

One thing I never like is when I get a cordless tool, and there’s only one battery pack for it. If you’re going to use your drill/driver like I do, it is essential to have two battery packs. It comes with two 18-Volt NiCad battery packs, so you know you’ll have plenty of power and battery life left to get the job done without having to slow down waiting for batteries to recharge.

Quick One-Hour Charger Translates Into Less down Time

Even though the DeWalt DC970K-2 comes with two powerful 18-volt NiCad battery packs, it is still useful to have a quick charger. It gives an added level of confidence when you’re working non-stop. Your spare battery pack will be fully charged long before your other battery pack wears down.

Keyless Ratcheting Chuck Design Makes Changing Bits and Drivers Easy

A sturdy, lightweight plastic ½-inch ratcheting chuck makes it easy to change from drill bit to fastening tip. It’s precision made so you can bet that it’s going to hold on tight to any bit or fastener, yet release the bit easily without hurting your hands or wrists in the process.

DC970K-2 vs. DC825B

The obvious difference between these two great tools is that the DC970K-2 is a drill/driver combo, while the DC825B is an impact driver. Most people seem to choose the combination tool and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. But if you’re looking to do specialty work like screw down lots of composite decking boards, or remove rusty old sheet metal screws from a pool cage, than you’re better off buying the DC825B impact driver. However, if you’re looking for a versatile everyday tool that’s going to be the heart of your operation, than you’re better off with the DC970K-2 drill/driver combination. You’ll also get two batteries with the DC970K-2, whereas with the DC825B batteries are sold separately.

My Take on the DC970K-2 18-Volt Drill/Driver

I’m impressed with the power that this tool has to offer. When compared to the DC825B impact driver, it’s not going to have the same power to drive home the nuts and bolts, but it does have enough juice to really pack a punch when you need it most. I also like the fact that you get two battery packs, and it all fits into the convenient hard plastic carrying case. And for less than $100, it is a hard deal to beat.

How Much Does It Cost and What Comes In The Box?

Some retail stores sell this drill for well over $100. That’s why I like shopping on Amazon for all my power tool needs. For around $90, you’ll get the drill/driver, two 18-volt NiCad battery packs, a one hour charger, and a convenient carrying case. Throw in free shipping and you can see why I always buy my power tools from Amazon.

What Other Owners of the DeWalt DC970K-2 Have to Say

While most owners have some fantastic things to say about their DeWalt DC970K-2 Drill/Driver, it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t talk about some of the negative aspects. The main reason why it’s so affordable is because it’s not as high-end as some of DeWalt’s other tools, and this has earned it a few negative reviews. But for the price of the tool and the features it comes with, it’s easy to see why it’s gotten so many great reviews as well.

  • “Great drill that really accomplishes anything I throw at it. I’ve been able to easily screw in 3″ construction screws into dry fir. Great for flooring applications and really nice slow speed to make sure you’re starting steady.”
    -N. Ilyn
  • “There is a reason why I only buy DeWalt. They practically gave this drill set away. A must have for any household. Great for standard projects. Bump up to the impact models if you’re going to build a barn.”
    -ddans vob
  • “Fast, reducing a step you’d otherwise have to take changing out bits and the driver. The locking sprocket mechanism is great because it ensures the drill stops exactly when you want it to—not overdriving or drilling. Helps accuracy. It’s all lightweight enough to make it easy to use without being weighty on the arm. Battery recharges in an hour, as promised, and runs for a long, long time. Well done.”
    -Marcia Macomber
  • “Everything I expected and more. DeWalt is the very best, in my opinion and this fit the bill. I have been using it every day for a week and battery is still charged up. Love the variable speed and plenty of power”
    -John Jo
  • “I went through many drills in the past decade. This is by far the best. Holds a charge for a very long time and has tons of power. Buy this.”
    -A. Nicol ‘AWN’
