Detailed Review Of The DeWalt DCD760KL Cordless Drill

DCD760KL Vertical Drilling Into WoodBecause I work in the construction industry and do lots of home renovation, I’m always on the lookout for high quality tools to add to my collection. Having a powerful and reliable cordless drill is particularly important to me because my livelihood depends on it. In fact, hardly a day goes by that I don’t reach for a cordless drill, so I was excited to give the DeWalt DCD760KL 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Cordless Drill a try. From experience, I know that DeWalt cordless drills have an outstanding reputation amongst construction workers and DIY home renovators alike. So, how does the DeWalt DCD760KL measure up? Let’s take a look.

What Makes a Cordless Drill Good?

Cordless drills are like many power tools in that personal preference can play a big part in determining what someone considers to be the best cordless drill, but there are still a few key features that can make a particular model stand out. I also like to see how it compares with other highly rated cordless drills. The most important areas to pay attention to are:

  • Power
  • Battery Life
  • Dimensions
  • Speeds
  • Bonuses
  • DCD760KL vs. DCD970KL
  • Warranty

DCD760KL Side View 2How Much Power Does It Have?

Cordless drills have their power capacity measured in volts and higher voltage models can usually tackle larger projects of greater length without having to worry about the tool running out of juice. In the past, drills with higher voltages often required a heavy battery, but DeWalt is now able to put more power into smaller packages. The DCD760KL packs 18 volts of power into a drill and battery smaller than many 12 volt drills used to be. This not only means that the drill features plentiful power in a small package – it also reduces user fatigue during use. This 18 volt drill passes the power test with flying colors.

How Good Is The Battery?

The included Lithium-Ion batteries last a long time, and the DeWalt DCD760KL charger will give them a full charge in about 30 minutes. Older cordless drills often came with NiCad batteries that discharged quickly and took forever to recharge. This DeWalt drill comes with two batteries so you can always have a fully charged spare ready to go. Also, the Lithium-Ion batteries can be used with other 18 volt Dewalt tools in service since 1996.

DCD760KL Screw Into WoodHow Big and How Heavy?

It is very compact for an 18 volt cordless drill. It only weighs about 4 pounds and is approximately 8.2 inches in length without a bit. It also features a ½ inch chuck that can accept super-sized bits that might be needed for larger holes. This cordless drill’s small size makes it ideal for jobs in tight spaces and the light weight means it’s easy to use for long periods of time without hand, arm, or shoulder strain. It’s also great for jobs that require drilling over your head with outstretched arms.

Variable Speeds?

The best cordless drills have multiple speeds and torque settings that can be adjusted based on your job and the DCD760KL is no slacker in this department. This DeWalt drill has a 0-500 rpm range for larger holes or dense materials and a rapid 0-1,700 rpm setting for drilling smaller holes quickly. Add the 17 torque settings to the mix and there aren’t many projects this drill can’t tackle.

Does It Have a Light?

If you have ever tried to drill a hole or drive a screw in a confined area, you know how hard it can be to see what you’re doing – even on a bright sunny day or under strong lights. This drill answers the problem with a brilliant LED light that illuminates your project – no more guessing whether your drilling in the right spot.

DCD760KL vs. DCD970KL

When contemplating a power tool purchase, I always like to look at the features and price of a comparable model the next level up to see what might be available for just a few dollars more. In this case it’s quite a step as you’re entering a whole new category of cordless drills. The DeWalt DCD970KL is a cordless hammer drill which adds hammering action that can make it a little easier to drill materials such as concrete and masonry. The DCD760KL can drill through those materials, but it takes a little longer. The hammer drill has an additional range of speeds, but it also adds more than a pound in weight.

What’s in the Box?

DCD760KL Vertical Screw Into SteelMy Take on the DeWalt DCD760KL Cordless Drill

Overall I think DeWalt did a very nice job on this cordless drill. It can handle most drilling jobs around the construction site or at your home, and its shape and weight make it easy to use. As someone used to the old NiCad batteries, I especially like the long-lasting power and quick recharging properties of the Lithium-Ion batteries.

Any Complaints?

It features a keyless chuck as many drills do these days. Older drills with keys for tightening the chuck often found themselves without a key over time and the owners were faced with the dilemma of trying to tighten a bit in place without the proper tool. One drawback to keyless chucks is that the bit can loosen over time. The answer: tighten the chuck every so often.
