When you need a wrench and have little room in which to work, there’s no better tool for the job than an impact wrench. The DeWalt DCF880HM2 20-volt MAX Lithium Ion 1/2-Inch Impact Wrench has a hog ring that makes it easy to change sockets with little effort, making it ideal for contract work and odd jobs around the house. It also includes a spare battery, so you’ll never need to worry about running out of power before you’ve completed your task.
What Makes an Impact Wrench Good?
The two most important things to consider when buying an impact wrench are the power source and the method for attaching sockets. An impact wrench can run on pneumatic or battery power. Since a pneumatic impact wrench uses an external power source, it feels lighter in the hand. If you need to buy multiple power tools, pneumatic tools may cost less in the long run because you can use the same compressor to power more than one tool. On the other hand, pneumatic tools give you less flexibility for movement because they require hoses.
The DeWalt DCF880HM2 impact wrench uses a hog ring to secure sockets. A release button makes it easy to remove a socket and install a new one — so it’s is a perfect choice if you won’t always be using your impact wrench for the same job. If you only plan to use your impact wrench with one socket, you may want one with a detent pin instead. A detent pin holds a socket more securely. However, a detent pin also makes sockets more difficult to remove.
One of the things we like most about the DeWalt DCF880HM2 is the fact that it has three forward-facing LED lights. With the lights originating from slightly different angles, you can work in a shadow-free environment — very useful when you’re working without a lot of extra space. The lights remain illuminated for an extra 20 seconds after you release the trigger.
It also has an extra tough grip that helps to prevent the tool from slipping when it releases stuck bolts.
DeWalt XR Battery System
The DeWalt DCF880HM2 includes two 20 volt XR batteries and a charger. The battery charges fast and works for up to 24 hours between charges. More importantly, the XR battery system allows you to use a single power source with a variety of DeWalt tools. Some of the DeWalt tools that work with the XR battery include hammer drills, nailers and blowers. Each battery has a gauge that shows you the current charge level at a glance.
The DeWalt DCF880HM2 has a generous warranty that includes a 90 day refund period. If it can’t do the job, simply send it back within 90 days. With this impact wrench, you’ll also receive one year of free service and a three year guarantee against manufacturer defects.
Amazon.com is our recommended supplier for the DeWalt DCF880HM2. We checked nine other popular online merchants and found an average price of $260 for this impact wrench. Amazon.com’s price is just $240.00 at the time of writing. Replacement DeWalt XR batteries cost about $65 each.
What’s in the Box
Included with the DeWalt DCF880HM2, you’ll find a detailed instruction manual as well as a convenient storage case. DeWalt also packages this impact wrench with two 20 volt XR batteries and a fast charger. The carrying case is large enough to hold the impact wrench and all of its accessories. The wrench includes no sockets; you’ll need to purchase and store those separately.
The DeWalt DCF880HM2 has a maximum breakaway torque of about 150 ft/lbs. That’s plenty of power if you’re installing new bolts or removing bolts that aren’t stuck. If you deal with frozen or rusted bolts regularly, though, you may need a bit more power. Look at the DeWalt DCF899P1 ($350.00) instead. With up to 1,000 ft/lbs of breakaway torque, the DCF899P1 can remove absolutely anything.
If you need to save a bit of money and already have some DeWalt 18 volt XRP batteries available, take a look at the DeWalt DC820B ($90). Its torque characteristics compare favorably to those of the DCF880HM2. It costs quite a bit less, though, because it doesn’t include batteries or a charger.
If you’ve been using power tools for a long time, you may have the impression that batteries simply don’t provide enough power to get tough jobs done. Pneumatic power has some advantages over battery power, but reliability isn’t necessarily one of them. The capacity of the DeWalt XR battery is truly astounding. The best part is that it doesn’t self-discharge or suffer from the “memory effect” of older batteries. The XR battery charges to its maximum capacity every time. If you’re not going to use it right away, go ahead and store it; it’ll be ready when you are.
For smaller jobs around the house, the hog ring fastener really is ideal. Compared to a detent anvil, a hog ring has a slight possibility of losing its grip on a socket. In practice, though, you’re rarely — if ever — going to lose a socket while you work. It is notoriously difficult, on the other hand, to remove a socket from a detent anvil. If you aren’t going to use the same socket every time you use your impact wrench, a hog ring is the way to go.
The only drawback of the DeWalt DCF880HM2 impact wrench is that it lacks the torque to remove frozen or rusted bolts. For really difficult jobs, you may want to choose the DeWalt DCF899P1 as we mentioned above. In addition, you may want to consider the DCF899P1 if you routinely need to tighten bolts past 100 ft/lbs of torque. If you frequently push the DCF880HM2’s motor to its limit, you may not get several years of service out of it.
