Detailed Review Of The DeWalt DW716 Double Bevel Compound Miter Saw

DW716 Bevel ActionInstalling crown molding in a room can be a great way to dress it up or give it a little additional character. However, this can be a tricky task for even experienced carpenters. To make my life easier, I like to use the DeWalt DW716 15 Amp 12-Inch double-bevel compound miter saw. It allows me to make bevel and miter cuts at the same time.

As you likely know, crown molding is not installed flat against a wall, so where the two pieces of trim meet in a corner requires that each end have both a miter and bevel angle cut. A miter cut is when the trim is cut to fit against another piece of trim such as at the corner of a door or window – in this case the trim would usually have a 45 degree miter cut, but the actual cut would be at 90 degrees to the saw table. A bevel cut is a different beast as the actual cut has an angle as well. Thanks to the DeWalt DW716 miter saw, both cuts can be done simultaneously.

What To Look For in a Compound Miter Saw

While choosing a miter saw does involve personal preference, there are a few areas that I always pay close attention to. I also like to see how it compares against other leading miter saws. Let’s see how the DeWalt DW716 does in each of these areas:

  • Capabilities
  • Safety
  • Weight
  • Blade Size
  • Power
  • Blade Stops
  • DW716 vs. DW715
  • DW716 vs. DWS780
  • Warranty

DW716 Cutting Baseboard 4What Can You Do with the DW716?

It can make miter cuts up to 50 degrees in both directions, which makes it ideal for just about any trim job you might encounter. The saw head also swivels to allow bevel cuts up to 48 degrees left and right. If you have ever cut crown molding ‘the old way’, you will be very impressed by how much easier this DeWalt miter saw makes the task. If you cut crown molding for the first time with the this miter saw, you may wonder why anyone finds it to be a difficult task. If that wasn’t enough, its 15amp motor and 12″ blade make it a very capable chop saw.

Make Safety your Priority

Saws of all types can be dangerous if proper care isn’t taken during use. Even carpenters who have been working at their trade for many years can have accidents if they get careless. DeWalt took this into consideration when they designed the DW716, and as a result it features a blade guard to help protect hands and fingers from the spinning blade. The guard moves up and out of the way when it makes contact with what you’re cutting and drops back into place as you lift the arm. It also has an interlocking safety trigger to protect against accidental startups.

DW716 On StandKeep It Light & Portable

You might have the best miter saw in the world, but if it’s too heavy to move comfortably, it will probably remain in your workshop or truck instead of where it’s needed. Fortunately that’s not an issue with the this miter saw as it weighs in at a very manageable 44 pounds and there is a convenient carrying handle which makes it easy to move.

Go For A Blade With 12 Inches of Gusto

There are miter saws available with 8 and 10 inch blades, but why would you want them when this DeWalt miter saw offers 12 inches of cutting capability? The DW716 miter saw allows you to cut baseboards up to 6½ inches tall in the vertical position and crown molding up to 5¼ inches can be nested against the fence, so you can cut the molding as if it were already fitted to your ceiling. The 12 inch blade also makes the miter saw suitable for slicing through a wide variety of framing lumber.

Big Project Power

While you don’t need much power to cut through most types of trim, the DW716 can also be used as a chop saw during your framing projects. If you have ever tried to cut wet treated lumber, you know that’s when extra power is needed. This DeWalt miter saw won’t disappoint as it has a 15 amp motor which spins the blade at 3,800 rpm. Cutting deck posts is like slicing through butter.

DW716 SettingsSave Time with Pre-Set Blade Stops

Using capable power tools on any project will save you time and effort. DeWalt tools understands that concept and that’s why they provide pre-set miter and bevel stops for common angles. The arm or saw head locks into place so you have accurate cuts every time. The saw features 11 stops for miter cutting and 7 for bevel angles, this feature has saved me tons of time on my projects.

DW716 vs. DW715

Is the DW716 worth the additional $75 additional cost over its little brother, the DW715 single-bevel compound miter saw? It all depends on how much trim work you have lined up. The double-bevel capability of the DW716 can be well worth the additional money if you’re installing several rooms of crown molding, and even if you don’t think you’ll be doing a lot of trim projects at least you’ll be ready if you ever do.

DW716 vs. DWS780

While each of these awesome miter saws can cut both ways on the bevel, have a large cutting capacity and a powerful 15-amp motor to easily cut through the hardest pieces of lumber, the DeWalt DWS780 double bevel sliding compound miter has a few extra features that might make it more valuable than the DW716—but that really depends on how you use the tool and how often you use it. The DWS780 offers the XPS cross cutting positioning system for accurate cuts—even after a blade change. However, the DW716 has more saw stops, but lacks the sliding feature that allows you to make radial cuts. If you’re looking for a cheaper saw for average sized woodworking projects, then the DW716 is your best bet. But if you need a saw to cut really tall stock, then the DWS780 is the right choice for you.
