Detailed Review Of The DeWalt DW735X 13″ Two-Speed Planer

DeWalt DW735X planerA planer is a crucial power tool that ought to be in every woodshop. The DEWALT DW735X 13″ Two-Speed Planer Package allows you to cut finished and rough cut boards to the desired thickness. It is designed to meet the needs of any project, including the fabrication of custom millwork and furniture. It is capable of removing paper-thin layers, as well as thicker layers of all species of soft and hard woods. As a result, DW735X owners are able to save a significant amount of money by purchasing rougher lumber and dressing it down. While primarily a shop tool, it is light enough to be transported to jobsites or wherever else the tool is needed.

What Makes a Planer Great?

Great planers are capable of dressing boards to the desired thickness in a consistent manner with no variation in the desired thickness. In addition, the cuts made by the planer must be free of chatter marks and visible defects such as snipe. We will compare the DW735X against the following criteria:

  • Safety first
  • Unique features
  • Low weight
  • Cutting speeds
  • Power
  • DeWalt DW735X planerSafety First

As with all power tools, users of the DeWalt DW735X should read the manual before using the tool for the first time. While a safe machine, extra care needs to be taken when using planers, especially near the infeed and outfeed tables. Be careful not to place hands too close to either area, instead use guides to manipulate the planed material. Personal protection items, such as hearing protection and safety glasses, should also be used.

Not All Planers Are Created Equal

There are many excellent features that separate this planer from its competition. For starters, it has a three knife cutter-head, which delivers 30% longer knife life. Knife changes are also made quickly and easily. Also, The fan-assisted chip ejection system vacuums chips off of the cutter-head, and exhausts them out of the machine. This eliminates the chance of the machine clogging up due to the volume of chips produced.

The DeWalt DW735X 13” Two-Speed Planer weighs 100.1 pounds with the dimensions being 24 inches x 22 inches x 18 inches. Although primarily used in a shop, the tool is light and compact enough to be set up on a jobsite by two people.

My Take On The DeWalt DW735X

I found the DeWalt DW735X planer to be an excellent addition to my home workshop. I like the ease of connection to my existing dust collection system. While noisy, I found it to be a convenient size taking a small amount of space in my shop. In short, I am very happy with the results produced by this planer.

    Any Complaints?

The biggest complaint is in regards to the longevity of the blades. They can become dull easily, especially when running knotty hardwood materials through the machine. Another complaint is that it is loud, but this seems to be a problem of all planers.

    What Other Owners Think

“This is my second DeWalt DW735. First one was accidentally damaged beyond repair after 6 years of use. This one included the infeed and outfeed shelves, which are definitely a big asset. The screws to mount the shelves were already in place, just snapped them on, and attached the handle and ready to go. I ran 12 inch wide by 4 foot long walnut through it, no snipe, finish smooth as glass.”

“The machine sets up in about 5 minutes. It takes just a short bit to learn the control functions. The first board planed was perfect in all aspects. It is really nice to buy a tool that is ‘as advertised’. If you get one, be sure to get the DW735X model. The “X” model comes with an extra set of cutter blades and infeed / outfeed trays AND a chip collection attachment.”

“I run a small cabinet shop, we had need of a secondary smaller planer…looked at, used, borrowed, several kinds before springing for this one. We got about 200brd ft of knotty hickory on both sides, a hundy of knotty alder before blades began to show nicks, leaving small lines. When the knives are sharp, we get a better surface than on my $3500 Powermatic 15″ molder planer.”
